A few blues

At last ~ a new post (my apologies for the long absence), with a few blues for this month's edition of ROY G BIV*, the photo challenge inspired by artists Jennifer Coyne Qudeen & Julie Booth...

The view through an airplane window is pretty commonplace for most of us these days, but I haven't witnessed it for a very long time. Heading over to the US this week, after a seven year absence, gazing out of the little airplane window gave me quite a thrill (and I probably took enough photos to make quite a substantial flip book—people must have thought it was my first time on a plane!)... For me, this glimpse out in the great blue beyond also illustrates my word for this month: 'Imagine'. After a period of transition, new possibilities are now filling my imagination.

My mother's enormous bushes of hydrangeas seemed like another perfect subject for 'BLUE'—and the timing couldn't have been better. There are dozens of blooms in various states of flower, and almost all in my favorite shade of hydrangea-blue (sprinkled with a few verging toward purple-y-pink).

I am very behind in posting photos of studio projects (as well as visiting other 'virtual' studios), but will enjoy catching up when I return to Italy in a few weeks... In the meanwhile, happy summer solstice to those of you in the northern hemisphere—and those of you in the south can take comfort in knowing your days will slowly be growing 'longer' once again!

{*A note on ROY G BIV in case you haven't seen it mentioned here in the past... Each month is devoted to a different color of the rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet. This is the second year of the photo challenge, and all are welcome to join in; guidelines are here.}

  1. So glad to "hear" fr you, Lisa! I am guessing that you are visiting your parents...must be quite a change fr lovely Florence (though VA is lovely this time of year as well). We are smack in the midst of hydrangea season...all those beautiful shades of blue (which you captured so exquisitely!). But I just LOVE that first shot fr the plane..very otherworldly...

  2. Wonderful photos - amazing blues. I will look out of the aeroplane window when I fly to France this weekend - if I find myself in the window seat. It's always mesmeric looking out at all that blue nothing with the occasional streak of white cloud - very calming and thought-provoking.
    And ... I just love that green plant-covered Italian wall in your post below. I somehow missed it before ... amazing.

  3. The blue skies from your airplane window are startingly clear and bright, I feel as if I were sitting right next to you. And the hydrangeas are gorgeous in hues and detail.

    I've been away from the blogging world for quite some time too and catching up will take me weeks! Enjoy your stay in the US.

  4. Hydrangeas are such fun plants. You can change the intensity of their color by feeding them plant foods of various sorts. The blossoms always look like flowers within flowers to me. Yours are quite beautiful with those subtle pinks and purples amid the blues!

  5. Oh, I wish I was flying somewhere! That beautiful blue sky. And hydrangeas are just about my favourite thing in my garden. A bit skeletal in the southern hemisphere winter but big fat leaf buds hold lots of blue promise to come. Enjoy your holiday.

    1. Thanks, Michael...I love them too - especially the blue ones - and it was a real treat to see my mother's in such a glorious state of bloom. I'll have to take a look at your hydrangeas...
